I checked the weather repeatedly before setting out, which is still no guarantee, but luck was with me and it was glorious. Here you see a couple of patches of snow, which surely must be perennial since it was the second week of August...

On each of the snowy patches I was amused to see diehard skiers trying their slats and snowboards for what looked to be some extremely short rides.
