The actual route starts at the small city of Yawatahama on the coast. Naturally, if you used Yawatahama as your base camp, you’re here already. The ferry port for ferries to Kyushu is on the coast just west of the center of town, at the point where you turn right to start cycling the peninsula.

The main road travels along the ridge. There aren’t really any major elevations; the road is just high enough to provide nice views like this.
