Journey’s end, and central Nagano’s chief tourist attraction: the famous Zenkoji temple, originally built in the 7th century. This particular visit was perfectly timed: not only were the cherry trees in full bloom, but the temple was also in the middle of the Gokaicho ceremony that is held only once every six to seven years.

Of course “timed it perfectly” in the previous item applies only if you didn’t really want to see anything but the backs of people’s heads.  Here’s a better view of the crowds. The line extends all the way back through the gate in the distance...
