You'd expect a mountainous area so close to a major population center to be pretty well developed for tourism, and you'd be right. This facility is called the "Rokko Country House" and it offers miniature golf, paddle boats, a fishing pond, a go-cart course and - perhaps most importantly for sweaty cyclists - a cable car that goes down the mountain on the other side to the hot springs at Arima. It's a short (12 minutes) but rather expensive (1,770 yen return) trip.
Further west is Rokko's model ranch, the Rokko Pasture (actually "ranch" in Japanese: Rokko bokujo). It has what you'd expect at a ranch designed to accommodate families, including cows and sheep and pony and horseback riding. Shops nearby sell locally made milk, cheese and ice cream; you can also watch the cheese-making process.
