It occurred to me that I hadn't shown any photos taken on the bridges themselves, and people might worry that they had to cycle right beside the lanes of cars and trucks. Never fear: you're completely separated from all four-wheeled traffic, in wide lanes like this provided on one if not both sides of the bridge.
And I may have undersold the view from the bridges as well. Here's one example: apparently local tour boats make trips to this shrine island; I saw one arriving just as I passed by. Japan has had at least two thousand years of history to create places like this; even today, despite relentless urbanization, you could spend your entire life trying (and failing) to see them all.
