If I had to choose one representative photo of the route, this would be it - this is what it's like. In many parts, the bike route is even painted green so there is no chance of getting lost. Note the ever-present palms, showing you how far south (and west) you are.

There's a shrine like this near the minshuku in Onomichi as well. This particular island, Ikuchishima, has a temple (Kosanji) and a small art museum, but it's probably more noteworthy as the approach to the Tatara Bridge, one of the most distinctive bridges of the entire route.
