The final day of cycling was the easiest: a leisurely cruise along the south shore, to visit a friend and see some of the war-related sites of interest. The road is mostly level apart from a very hilly section at the southeastern tip. Palm trees along the roadsides and pineapple, banana and sugar cane planted here and there made it a very pleasant ride.
A few years ago one of my Okinawan friends built a kiln (shown to the left in this photo) entirely by hand and now makes pottery here. Okinawan pottery is quite colorful, and the pottery-making area couldn't be more convenient to explore: the Tsuboya-yaki kilns are a short walk south from Kokusai-dori in Naha (head south along the narrow street that begins across the street from Mitsukoshi). The colorful Okinawan glassware might also make a great gift.
