Unfortunately, the first morning of cycling turned out to be 50 km straight up the coast in a steady drizzle. I'm sure the views would often have been lovely in better conditions: for one thing, I cycled by Okuma Beach, which is both a beach resort and the site of a U. S. military facility, at the height of the rain, and naturally didn't stop.

Fortunately, the weather began to clear as I neared the northern tip of the island. This is just below Hedo-misaki, the northern peninsula.
