Another day, another question, another case of nobody around to ask. One day I'll learn the name of these unusual plants... but not on this trip. Since they can obviously survive in beach sand, maybe the mystery of the thatched compounds you saw a few photos ago isn't such a mystery after all.

After awhile the route veers just slightly inland so you're cycling through pine forests instead of beach scenery. It's nice, except when (as here) the pavement needs repaving and the pine needles make it hard to cycle without slip-sliding. Near here was a tiny campground with toilet, probably just for day-hikers, but it might make a nice emergency campground for cyclists as well.
