Just south of Miyazaki on the eastern coast of Kyushu is a place with rocks that form patterns that are aptly described by its name, the "Devil's Washboard." It looks sort of like this, on a much larger scale. On this coast, the scenery soon changes from spectacularly rocky to spectacularly sandy.

This is yet another point where the route gets tricky: riding along the coastal road, you'll see a sign pointing to the bikepath (Pacific Coast Bicycle Route) coming up on the left in 500 meters. Take the FIRST left, even if it seems way, way too soon. Choose wisely and you'll soon find yourself riding amidst green pines heading toward white sands. (On the other hand, if you choose incorrectly, you'll get an impromptu and extended in-depth tour of rural farmlands...)
