As I recall, this impressive white island is Mitsukejima, located along the Koji Kaigan. If so (I don't remember two like it), it's not the most famous view: nicknamed "battleship island, it's supposed to be viewed from the front since it really does look like the prow of a battleship that way (naturally, I didn't know the "correct" way to photograph it!). Literally koji means "the road to love"- the name comes from a typical local legend about secret lovers, betrayal, tragic death and suicide. I guess happy endings are never memorable enough to result in good legends...

The Koji Kaigan coast offers any number of unusual rock formations like thie one.
