Even the coastal road does go high occasionally. This is along the lower eastern tip near Tsukumo-wan, a pretty series of inlets. The name is written with the Chinese characters for "99" but is pronounced "Tsukumo."

The Japan Sea coast has most of Honshu's nuclear power plants (since the authorities decided it was better for safety to put them in sparsely populated areas), and not everybody is happy about it. On this house you can see the characters for Genpatsu Hantai, or "No to Nuclear Power!"
